A gorgeous, sunny day helped fill the streets of Smithville for the annual Smithville Christmas Parade Saturday.An impressive crowd lined the streets from near Smithville Elementary School, where the procession began, to the courthouse square where Chamber of Commerce Director Suzanne williams joined Tom Duggin of DTC in hosting the event.Mr. and Mrs. DeKalb County, Mike Foster and Laura Stone, served as the Grand Marshals.The parade, sponsored every year by the Smithville Volunteer Fire Department, was led into town by Police Chief Randy Caplinger and Sheriff Patrick Ray, and boasted the DeKalb County High School Fighting Tiger Band, an array of floats, vintage automobiles, local pageant royalty, military veterans, horseback riders, horse-drawn wagons, motorcycle riders, boy and girl scout troops, firefighters, EMS and the rescue squad.Santa Claus parked his sleigh and rolled into town on the Smithville Fire Department’s new Ladder Truck.The award for best float went home with New West Point Free Will Baptist Church.Girl Scout Troops #750, #343, Daisy Troop 1107, and Troop #830 took the second-place award, and DeKalb Community Bank took third.The DCB crew also won the "Spirit Award," sponsored by the Smithville Business and Professional Women's Club.
