Ring accused of mistreating toddler

A Smithville man has been indicted by the grand jury and charged with child abuse. "On or about December 18, Ring intentionally and knowingly did, other than by accidental means, treat a fifteen month old child, in such a manner as to inflict injury, constituting the offense of child abuse." alleges the sealed indictment against Kenneth Brian Ring, 26.
Detective Matt Holmes of the Smithville Police Department presented the case to the April term of the grand jury.
Ring's bond is set at $25,000. He will be in court on May 20.
Also charged under a sealed indictment is 25-year-old Matthew Allen Gilles. Gilles is charged with sale and delivery of a Schedule II controlled substance.
His bond is set at $60,000, and his court date is May 20.
Gilles' girlfriend Elizabeth D. Riley, 20 was charged with filing a false report for allegedly attempting to keep officers from serving the warrant on Gilles.
Her bond is $1,500. Her court date is  April 21.
According to Sheriff Patrick Ray, when he and his deputies went to Gilles' home on Short Mountain Highway to execute the warrant, they could see Gilles through the window.
Ray says that deputies knocked on the door and Riley answered, telling them that Gilles wasn't in the house, and that unless they had a warrant they were not going to be allowed to enter.
She then allegedly tried to shut the door on them.
Meanwhile, 35-year-old Sharon Morton of Readyville is also charged under a sealed indictment.
Morton is accused of theft of property over $1,000.
According to Chief Mark Collins of the Alexandria Police Department, Morton was working as a property manager for the Maplewood and Parkview apartment complexes in Alexandria when she took approximately $9,873 from approximately 10 tenants living at the properties, which are owned by MACO Management Co, Inc.
Collins reports that between November 2009 and September 2010 Morton collected the money  from security deposits and rent, but never deposited them to Maco.
The case was investigated by Sergeant Chris Russell of the Alexandria Police Department.
Morton was booked into the DeKalb County Jail on April 15.
Her bond is $25,000, and she will be in court on May 20.
Sheriff Ray also reports that two people have been charged in connection with a recent theft.
According to Ray, Samuel Wade Walker and Bratten Hale Cook, III are charged with theft of property over $1,000.
Cook was also issued a citation for simple possession of a schedule II , III, IV, and VI controlled substance.
Ray said that at the time of his arrest Cook had in plain view at his residence a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana, eight xanax pills, half of a percocet pill, oxycontin, suboxone, and suboxone strips. Cook allegedly admitted that these items belonged to him.
Walker is charged with two counts of theft of property over $1,000 and one count of aggravated burglary.
Cook and Walker are alleged to have taken four shotguns from a residence on Maple Lane without the owners consent on January 1. The sheriff says that the stolen guns were then sold.
Bond for Cook is set at $5,000, and he will be in court on April 28. Bonds for Walker total $25,000 He will be in court on April 28.
Walker is charged with aggravated burglary with the intent to commit a theft in a separate case.
He allegedly entered  a residence on Cripps Lane through a back door on August 29. He then allegedly took four shotguns and several other items from the home with a total value of $5, 575.
