Shawn Caplinger of Cap's Works in Smithville is giving away several of his high-end masks at the Smithville Police Department’s Halloween celebration Thursday.
Caplinger has worked with some of the biggest names in the horror film industry, including Rob Zombie and Kane Hodder, as well as working with actors from the Walking Dead TV series. He will bring a number of his hand-made, professional quality masks and other items from his shop.
“I’ve been really lucky with this,” Caplinger told the Review. It started out as a hobby, I was basically just fooling around and learned how to make masks, and it just caught on.”
Even though he has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, Caplinger said that his shop is still a hobby, and that he enjoys the sideline very much.
“I don’t really even watch horror movies,” He said. “But I get to hang out with some big people in the industry on a regular basis, and they are all really cool. This is not a job, I still have one of those, but I’ll keep doing this as long as I can have fun with it.”
The items from Cap’s Works will be given away at the Smithville Police Department during the “Trick or Treat Halloween Downtown” celebration on Oct. 31.
The event will go on all day, and a Halloween costume contest for children up to pre-school age will be held at 10 a.m. in the community room upstairs at city hall. A costume contest for young people up to age 12 will be held at 4 p.m.
The event was organized by Beth Adcock, records clerk for the police department, and serves as a way for the Smithville Police Department to give back to the community, to allow trick or treating in a safe environment, and to give police officers a chance to interact with the children of the community and gain their trust. It also allows children to Trick-or-Treat during daylight hours in a safe environment.
Many businesses will participate as well. Stores and offices with a picture of a pumpkin on their windows will have treats for the youngsters.
Maps showing which businesses are taken part in the festivities will be available at the police department, Justin Potter Library and other locations around town.
Tickets to win the items from Cap’s Works are free, and can be obtained at the city police department and Charlie Max & Co. Salon on Main Street until 4:30 pm Oct. 31st. The drawing will be held at that time at city hall.
