Christopher Daniel Gibbs, 36, of McMinnville, a front-seat passenger in a 1999 Chevy Cavalier driven by 39-year-old Carol Ann Tipton of McMinnville, was trapped and had to be extricated by members of the Smithville Volunteer Fire Department after this collision Sunday afternoon. Corporal Travis Bryant of the Smithville Police Department told the Review that Gibbs was airlifted to Vanderbilt Hospital after a two-vehicle crash in front of Jewel's Market on South Congress Boulevard. The accident occurred just after 3 p.m. Bryant said Tipton, who was traveling south on Highway 56, turned into the path of a northbound Jeep Cherokee driven by 19-year-old Jason Michael Petre of McMinnville. Tipton was attempting to pull into the parking lot of Jewel's Market. Petre was reportedly uninjured, and Tipton was transported by DeKalb EMS with minor injuries. Bryant said Tipton was issued citations for an improper turn and violation of the financial responsibility law.
