A local man was taken into custody by the sheriff’s department last week after he allegedly assaulted his own mother and vandalized her property.

Justin Matthew Cripps, 29, was charged with domestic assault and three counts of vandalism on April 27.

Sheriff Patrick Ray a deputy responded to a Short Mountain Highway home for a possible domestic assault and vandalism. Upon arrival, the officer spoke with a woman who reported that her son, Cripps, struck her several times in the face with his hands. Cripps allegedly head-butted the woman several times in the forehead as well. Cripps allegedly grabbed her arm, twisted it backward, and told her he was going to break her arm.

He is charged vandalism for allegedly taking his mother’s walking cane and punching it through the wall and for using a hammer to break out the back passenger glass in the door of her vehicle.

While incarcerated on April 29, Cripps reportedly vandalized a monitor after using a phone in the booking area. Ray said Cripps slammed down the phone, and hit and broke the monitor.

His bond totals $12,500, and he will appear in court on May 11.

Meanwhile, 34-year-old Michael Eugene Lattimore was charged with criminal impersonation on April 26.

Ray said a deputy was patrolling Magness Road saw a vehicle on fire at a residence. The automobile was near a wooded area. The officer also spotted a man walking down the road. He stopped and spoke to the man, who said his name was Joseph Anthony Herman. The man did not provide his date of birth or any other personal information.

A further investigation revealed that the man was Michael Eugene Lattimore. Lattimore was subsequently arrested for criminal impersonation.

His bond is $3,500 and his court date is May 11.
