Man arrested for bread theft

Smithville Police arrested a 48-year-old local man on Sept. 8 for allegedly stealing bread outside a grocery store.

 

According to Captain Steven Leffew, Jeffrey Lee Johnson was arrested by Detective Brandon Donnell for theft after it was determined that he took bread from pallets outside a Smithville grocery store on Sept. 7. After reviewing surveillance of the theft, Johnson became a suspect. During the investigation, Johnson was located, and some of the bread was reportedly recovered.

 

His bond was set at $1,500.

 

Meanwhile, Sergeant Brad Tatrow took a report on Sept. 7 of someone taking a vehicle from the parking lot of Napa Auto Parts. The automobile was found near the Cannon/DeKalb line at Barnes Cemetery.

 

Police said Jeffery Scott McAlister, 36, became a person of interest, and upon further investigation by Detective Matt Holmes it was determined that McAlister had taken the vehicle from the parking lot, driven it to the cemetery, and left it there.

 

His bond was set at $5,000.

 

Officer Lance Dillard arrested 41-year-old Jeffery Lynn Sanders for public intoxication on Sept. 10.

 

According to police, Dillard was dispatched to the public square in reference to an intoxicated man in a truck. Upon arrival Officer Dillard found Sanders, who was lying across the front seat of the truck.

 

Sanders' speech was allegedly slurred, he was unsteady on his feet, and couldn't control his movements. Sanders was found to be a danger to himself and was placed under arrest.

 

His bond was set at $1,500.

 

Sergeant Travis Bryant arrested 63-year-old Ernest Eldridge for aggravated domestic assault on Sept. 10.

 

Police said a verbal altercation became physical when Eldridge allegedly attempted to choke a family member. His bond was set at $5,000.

 

Lacy Lee West, 33 was arrested for domestic assault on Sept. 13, then for public intoxication on Sept. 22.

 

Police said Corporal Chip Avera was called to check out a possible domestic incident on Sept. 13. He discovered that what started out as verbal later turned physical between the parties. West was determined to be the primary aggressor.

 

 Bond on the domestic assault charge was set at $2,500.

 

Then, nine days later, on Sept. 22, West was arrested again. According to police, Avera was dispatched to a local residence and found West in the front yard burning trash at 12:41 am. She allegedly had a strong odor of alcohol coming from her person, her eyes were red and watery, her speech was slurred, and she was unsteady on her feet.

 

Police said West had been warned on two previous occasions about being drunk in public, becoming a nuisance, and being a danger to herself and the public. She was placed under arrest for the safety of others and herself.

 

Bond on the public intoxication charge was set at $1,500.

 

Sergeant Brad Tatrow arrested 45-year-old Joseph Lamar Birdsong for DUI on Sept. 13.

 

Tatrow reportedly received a call of a possible intoxicated person leaving Mapco Express, and while patrolling the area, he spotted a vehicle traveling in the wrong lane. The automobile was reportedly weaving, and the driver appeared to have trouble negotiating curves.

 

The sergeant initiated a traffic stop and spoke with the driver, Birdsong, who allegedly had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his person, was unsteady on his feet, and his speech was slurred. Birdsong reportedly submitted to, but performed poorly on, field sobriety tasks.

 

His bond was set at $1,500.

 

 

 

Officer Will Judkins cited 18-year-old Issac Corbin Beck for possession of alcohol on Sept. 12. Officer Judkins received consent to search Beck's vehicle and allegedly found a bottle of Crown Royal and nine cans of beer.
