Man arrested for selling same car twice

City police have arrested a 24-year-old local man for attempting to sell the same car to two different people.

 

Joseph Matthew Giles II was arrested for deceptive business practices on Jan. 23.  According to police, a woman reported that she saw an advertisement on the internet for a 2005 Chrysler 300 that was for sale, and contacted the person who placed the ad, Giles.

 

Arrangements were reportedly made for her to buy the vehicle from Giles, but before money was exchanged it was discovered that Giles had traded the car in at a local car dealer on Jan. 21. According to police, Giles attempted to follow through with the transaction, and met the woman at City Hall, where police were waiting.

 

Giles was subsequently placed in custody. 

 

His bond was set at $1,500, and he will appear in court on Feb. 2.

 

Meanwhile, Ryan Lee Walden, 33, was arrested for violation of order of protection on Jan. 20.

 

Police responded to a welfare check on a vehicle in the Wal-Mart parking lot, and the officer observed Walden and another person together at the vehicle.  A warrants check reportedly revealed that there is an existing order of protection between Walden and the person with him. 

 

His bond was set at $1,500, and he will appear in court on Feb. 9.

 

Thomas Patrick Courtney, 47, was arrested for DUI and carrying or possession of weapon on Jan. 21.

 

Police reportedly responded to a reckless driver call, and made contact with the described vehicle in McDonald's parking lot. Upon speaking with the driver, who was identified as Thomas Courtney, the officer observed him to have blood shot eyes and slurred speech.

 

Courtney was allegedly unable to perform field sobriety tests satisfactorily, and police said the officer recovered a firearm from the back seat floor board.  Upon investigation it was discovered that Courtney is a convicted felon for habitual offender and DUI 4th, and is not to be in possession of a firearm. 

 

His bond was set at $ 6,500, and his court date is Feb. 9.

 

Manuel Gutierrez, 33, was arrested on for DUI and cited for implied consent, no driver's license, and failure to maintain lane of travel on Jan. 21. 

 

Police said an officer traveling west on West Broad Street observed a small car turn on to West Broad from a side street.  The officer then saw the car leave it's lane of travel over a dozen times within a short time. 

 

The officer attempted to stop the vehicle on West Broad Street, but it continued on to Carter Street before stopping. The officer made contact with the driver, who could not provide any identification and stated his name to be Manuel Gutierrez. 

 

Gutierrez reportedly had slurred speech, was unsteady on his feet, and performed poorly on field sobriety tasks. He was taken to the hospital, where he refused a blood/alcohol test. 

 

His bond was set at $1,500. And he will appear in court on Feb. 9.

 

Dylan Allen Crook, 20, was cited for simple possession and suspended driver's license on Jan. 23.

 

Police were investigating a possible fraud case involving Crook's vehicle.  Upon approaching the vehicle, officers allegedly detected an odor of marijuana coming from inside.  A search reportedly revealed two pills believed to be Oxycodone, for which no prescription was available.  A computer check revealed that Crook's license was suspended. 

 

He will appear in court on Feb. 9.
