A Spencer man died Friday after being struck by a tree while logging off Indian Creek Youth Camp Road Friday.
Royce Turner, 56, was recovered from the hillside by members of the Smithville-DeKalb County Rescue Squad, but was reportedly dead at the scene. Rescue squad member Joe Johnson told the Review that the accident happened on treacherous terrain.
“Two men were logging on a very steep hillside, and one of the men was cut down a tree that hit another tree when it fell, causing the second tree to fall on Turner, who was dead when we arrived. We had to travel for about a mile on a private drive after turning off Indian Creek Youth Camp Road, then had to take a Gator down an old logging road to get to him. We put him in a Stokes Basket and pulled him out, but it was too late.”
Along with the rescue squad, county firefighters, members of the sheriff’s department, and DeKalb EMS rushed to the scene.
