Authorities have arrested a man who fled the scene of a two-vehicle crash on Highway 56 near Federal Mogul Monday night.
43 year old Phillip John Carroll, 43, was taken into custody on Thursday, and has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage and duty to render aid and give information. The case was investigated by Trooper Tommy Cooper of the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
Carroll was reportedly traveling north on Cookeville Highway when he struck a southbound 2012 Chevy Sonic, driven by 44-year-old Danny Niles. After the impact, the truck continued off the roadway, struck a utility pole, and came to rest at the bottom of a steep ravine.
Carroll allegedly fled the scene on foot after the accident.
While Carroll’s vehicle was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed when the crash occurred, Sheriff Patrick Ray said that he was not being pursued by police. Ray said an officer was stopped in the southbound lane at the traffic light at Highway 56 and East Main just before the collision when he saw the truck run a red light and speed north. By the time the lawman turned his vehicle around, however, the truck was already out of sight, and he did not initiate a pursuit.
Carrol’s bond was set at $7,000, and he will appear in court on March 10.
