Marine Corps deserter arrested

A local man being sought by the Marine Corps to face desertion charges was picked up by the sheriff’s department last week.

 

Daniel Lynn Johnson, 20, has been charged with military desertion from the U.S. Marine Corps. The charges were revealed on Oct. 25, when deputies were dispatched officers were called to his Meridian Drive residence to investigate an unrelated incident.

 

A background check reportedly showed that Johnson was wanted by the Marines. He is to be picked up at the Sheriff’s Department by representatives of the Corp.

 

Johnson is being held without bond, and no court date is set.

 

Joshua Lee Underwood, 25, of Murfreesboro was arrested and charged with criminal impersonation on Oct. 24.

 

The sheriff said a deputy called to a Big Hurricane Road home to check out a report of a brother and sister arguing spoke with a woman who told him that her brother had Cannon County warrants against him. The man allegedly told the deputy that his name was Joshua Spurlock, and that he was born in 1994. Identification found in his wallet confirmed that his name was Underwood, and his sister and a friend verified it.

 

His bond was set at $1,500, and his court date is Nov. 17.

 

Matthew Dewayne Griffith, 31, was arrested and charged with theft of property over $1,000.

 

Ray said a deputy responding to an Adcock Cemetery Road home in reference to a tip about a stolen vehicle. The deputy made contact with Griffith, who admitted to being in possession of a 1993 Ford Ranger that was entered into the National Crime Information Center database as stolen from Cannon County.

 

His bond was set at $5,000, and he will appear in court on Nov. 10.
