The theft of a money bag from a local business is under investigation by the Smithville Police Department.

According to Police Chief Mark Collins, a customer went behind the counter at El Mariachi on West Broad Street around 2 p.m. Monday while they clerk was in the back of the building. The thief reportedly absconded with a bag containing some checks and an undisclosed amount of cash.

The money bag was later found near Walmart with the cash removed.

The chief said his department is reviewing surveillance video in an attempt to identify the thief.
