Mother and son arrested for shoplifting

City police busted a mother-son shoplifting team on Sept 29.Linda Sue Murphy, 52, and her son, 37-year-old Dewayne Dovie Thompson, were cited for shoplifting.Smithville Police Chief Randy Caplinger said that while Murphy and Thompson were shopping at Wal-Mart, Murphy knowingly and intentionally assisted Thompson in concealing items on his person in an attempt to deprive Wal-Mart of their property.Both parties will appear in General Sessions Court on Oct. 12.Meanwhile, a 30-year old man was arrested by city police after a joint effort with the sheriff’s department to investigate a possible burglary resulted in the pursuit of a suspect through a wooded area on Allen’s Ferry Road on Sept. 30.According to Caplinger, William Travis Malone was charged with evading arrest.While assisting deputies dispatched to the scene of a possible burglary in progress at an old barn on Allen's Ferry near Holmes Creek Road, authorities said Corporal Travis Bryant was flagged down by neighbors, who informed him that the suspect was hiding in an old silo.Bryant reportedly approached the silo, identified himself, and asked the suspect to come out.Malone allegedly fled the silo on foot, running into the woods nearby.Police said he was found a short time later lying down among tall weeds.He will appear in General Sessions Court on Oct. 11.City police cited Crystal Rae King, 35, for possession of drug paraphernalia on Sept. 28.Chief Caplinger said that while on a call at Wal-Mart, an officer saw King attempting to throw a needle in the trash can.King will appear in General Sessions Court on Nov. 15.Jonathon Carltion Armour, 25, was cited for theft of property on Oct. 1.According to police, the victim in the case filed a report on Sept. 27 stating that someone had stolen a box containing miscellaneous copper pieces from his front porch.An investigation allegedly revealed that Armour had taken the copper.He will appear in General Sessions Court on Oct. 25.Nicholas A Hollingsworth, 30, was cited for simple possession and possession of drug paraphernalia on Oct. 2.Hollingsworth was stopped for a traffic violation, and upon a search of his vehicle the officer reportedly found paraphernalia used for illegal drugs.A pill believed to be Dilaudid was also found.He will appear in General Sessions Court on Oct. 25.Anyone with information on any criminal activity is asked to contact the Smithville Police Department at 597-8210 or the Tip Line at 464-6046.All information is confidential.
