Nurse added at DCHS

It was revealed at the recent meeting of the school board that all DeKalb County Schools will now have a full-time nurse on duty.

The Board voted to add another full-time nurse, Wade Ferrell, at DCHS when it was discovered that the addition of a new student at the school would allow the position to be funded from the Special Education General Purpose budget. Apparently, if the student leaves the school system or is judged by a doctor to no longer require the care of the nurse, the position would no longer be eligible for special education funds.

In that case the board would have to seek other ways to pay for the position.

Three concerned parents with diabetic children spoke before the board at the September meeting, requesting that a nurse be added, and Coordinated School Health Coordinator Dee Anna Reynolds backed up the opinion, saying that an increase of students with chronic conditions made the move necessary.

The school budget did not provide funding for such a measure, however, Director of Schools Mark Willoughby assigned a substitute nurse at the high school until the board could find a way to pay for the position.

The school system now employs five registered nurses, one for each school. Chandra Adcock, Kim Turner, Christie Driver, Joanie Williams and the newly added Ferrell.
