While some debate the pros and cons of the flu vaccination, local healthcare workers agree that the vaccine is the best insurance against the virus.
With 12 flu-related deaths in the mid-state area already this flu season, officials are urging the public to get a flu shot.
“I know there is a bit of a controversy over the vaccine,” Michiko Martin of Family Medical Center told the Review Monday, “but it will not kill you. People die from the flu, not the vaccine. The vaccine is a dead virus. If you get the flu after taking the shot, which takes two weeks to work its way into your system, you probably had already been exposed to the virus.
Martin said that the best ways to avoid the flu include getting the vaccine, keep your hands clean, avoid being closed into crowded places, and use a mask if you are particularly susceptible.
“If you are going to be around seniors who or someone with a weak immune system, you might want to wear a mask,” Martin said. “Washing your hands is very important as well, It is a good idea to keep some hand sanitizer handy, and keep your hands clean.”
If it is too late to prevent the flu, and you are already showing symptoms, Martin said the best course is to get to the doctor.
“Even if you are vaccinated, there is no guarantee you wont get the flu,” she said. “There are many different strains of the virus, and sometimes a strain appears that was not vaccinated against. If you show symptoms, even if you have had the vaccine, you should see a doctor immediately.
“Tamiflu works well if it is given within 48 hours after you display symptoms, but many insurance plans require a positive flu test before they will pay for it, so time is crucial.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), flu symptoms can include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue and vomiting and diarrhea, although it is more common in children than adults. The CDC stresses, however, that not everyone with flu will have a fever.
The DeKalb County Health Department offers free flu vaccinations. Call 597-7590 in advance to set up a vaccination at the health department. Family Medical Center and most other local doctors and pharmacies also offer vaccinations.
