One man was airlifted after two loaded dump trucks collided and overturned off Coconut Ridge Road Saturday afternoon.
According to Trooper Chris Delong of the Tennessee Highway Patrol Bobby Hughes, 61, of Lebanon was negotiating a steep hill on Rutherford Lane in a 2015 Mack dump truck down a steep hill on Rutherford Lane trying when to when he was struck in the rear by a 2016 Kenworth dump truck driven by Harlan Galinelli, 53, of Gallatin.
Both dump trucks belong to Hunt Construction Company of Wilson County.
Galinelli reportedly lost control and ran into Hughes’ truck, causing it to overturn. Galinelli’s truck then went off the road, plunged approximately 100 yards down an embankment, and overturned as well. Both trucks came to rest on their sides.
The DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department’s Extrication and Rescue Team had to be called to free Hughes from the wreckage of his truck. He was transported to a nearby landing zone by DeKalb EMS and airlifted to Tri-Star Skyline Medical Center in Nashville, where he was treated and released. Galinelli was taken to Saint Thomas DeKalb Hospital by DeKalb EMS where he was treated and released as well.
The Trooper said Galinelli was cited for failure to exercise due care, and a citation against Hughes is pending for not wearing a seat belt.
