A three-vehicle wreck on Highway 56 left one person dead and three injured. A McMinnville man was killed and three other people were injured in the Tuesday crash. According to Sergeant Eric McCormick of the THP, Edgar Louis Madewell, 72, of McMinnville lost his life in the incident, which happened just south of Magness Road at about 2:20 p.m. Injured were 33-year-old Joshua Johnson of Smithville, 58-year-old Virginia Hendrixson of Liberty and 73-year-old Neodia Cantrell of Dowelltown. All three were transported to DeKalb Community Hospital by DeKalb EMS. McCormick said that Johnson was traveling north on Highway 56 in a 1997 Olds Bravada when he crossed the center line while negotiating a curve. He apparently crossed into the southbound lane and struck an oncoming 2008 Mazda SUV, driven by Hendrixson and carrying Cantrell as a passenger, nearly head on. The impact of the crash knocked Hendrixson's SUV sideways and caused it to overturn. The vehicle reportedly rolled over at least once before coming to rest on its wheels in the southbound lane. Johnson's Oldsmobile continued to travel north in the southbound lane, where he then collided with a southbound 2007 Ford Expedition driven by Madewell. Madewell reportedly veered left in an attempt to avoid a head-on collision, and was struck at an angle by Johnson’s Bravada. Madewell's Ford was then driven sideways into the northbound lane, yawed off the left shoulder of the highway and rolled over twice, ejecting Madewell. Madewell's vehicle came to rest upright in a field. After impact with Madewell's Expedition, Johnson's Olds continued in the northbound lane until coming to rest on its left side in the ditch. All were wearing their seatbelts except for Madewell. Johnson was issued citations for failure to maintain his lane of travel and failure to exercise due care. Criminal charges are pending. The crash was investigated by Sergeant Eric McCormick and Troopers Tommy Cooper and Troy Withers of the Tennessee Highway Patrol. The DeKalb County Sheriff's Department, DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department and DeKalb EMS assisted at the scene.
