Osama bin Laden was reported dead by the White House Sunday evening some Fifteen years after he declared war on The United States.Bin Laden was reportedly hunted down and killed by Navy SEALs based on information first gleaned several years ago from CIA detainees in Eastern Europe."The world is safer. It is a better place because of the death of Osama bin Laden," said President Barack Obama.Bin Laden was reportedly shot in the head during a fire fight, and his body was identified to nearly 100 percent certainty through DNA testing, CIA photo analysis, and confirmation by a woman believed to be one of bin Laden's wives. The body was then shuttled out to sea for a quick burial. One of his sons, Khalid, was also killed in the raid, as were two of bin Laden's al-Qaida cronies, including the apparent owner of the residence. Officials report that the information that resulted in bin Laden's death originated from detainees questioned in secret CIA prison facilities in Eastern Europe.Interrogators are said to have been told of a courier whom bin Laden particularly trusted. It took four more years to learn the man's name.In mid-2010, the man was overheard using a phone by intelligence officials, who then were able to locate the specially constructed compound where bin Laden was hiding. The operation was over in less than forty minutes, and the SEALs only apparent loss was a helicopter, which had to be destroyed after it malfunctioned.Bin Laden's body was taken to the USS Carl Vinson, where it was reportedly buried in the North Arabian Sea.In addition to the World Trade Center bombing and the simultaneous attacks on New York and the Pentagon, as well as the hijacked plane that crashed into a field in Pennsylvania that collectively claimed nearly 3,000 lives, bin Laden and Al-Qaida were also held responsible for the 1996 bombing of the Khobar Towers military complex in Saudi Arabia in which 19 U.S. servicemen were killed, the 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa that killed 224 people, the 2000 attack on the USS Cole that killed 17 American sailors in Yemen, the 2002 Suicide bombing of the US consulate in Karachi, Pakistan that killed 14 Pakistanis and numerous other schemes of varying success.Bin Laden was born into a large and wealthy Saudi Arabian construction family, and could have led a life of wealth and privilege. His exact birth date is not known but he gave the year as being 1957.Bin Laden’s interest in jihad was ignited in 1979 when he met refugees and opposition leaders in Afghanistan. He began raising funds for the Afghan resistance and was stripped of his Saudi citizenship in 1994, when he moved to Afghanistan. At one time bin Laden received funding from the CIA, but over time years he became deeply hostile to the US over its support for Israel. The depth of his hatred of America was evident in a March 1997 interview for CNN, conducted in eastern Afghanistan.During the interview, he said United States civilians would be targeted inside their own country as part of a "holy war", and that all American soldiers should be killed in the name of Allah.
