Parades kick off holiday season

The local AmVets post brought some color to last year's parade in Smithville

DeKalb County will soon kick off the holiday season with three Christmas parades. The cities of Alexandria, Liberty, and Smithville will all host their annual parades again this year.

 

The Alexandria parade will take place on Nov. 30, and will begin at 2 p.m. Participants will line up for the parade at 1 p.m. For more information on the Alexandria parade, call City Councilman Bennett Armstrong at 954-999-3828.

 

The Smithville Christmas Parade will be held on Dec. 6.

 

Participants will begin lining up at Smithville Elementary School at noon, and the parade will start at 1 p.m. To enter, call or leave a message with Jeff Wright at 597-6750 or John Poss at 597-1135. Antique cars and horse riders do not need to pre-register. All others must call by Dec. 4 to insure a spot.

 

The Liberty parade is set for Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. Participants will line up at 1 p.m., with a drawing for prizes at the conclusion of the festivities. For more information call Charlotte Bratten at 464-8085.

 

Meanwhile, Christmas on the Square will be held Dec. 4 from 5-8 p.m. in downtown Smithville. The event will include an open house at the courthouse and Chamber of Commerce offices.

 

The Community Chorus and other special music will begin at 5 p.m. on the west side of the Courthouse. Boy Scout Troop #347 will have a flag-raising ceremony at 5:25 p.m. A tree-lighting ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. on the west side of the courthouse.

 

A free photo booth and Christmas DJ music will be provided by the City of Smithville. Enjoy your favorite holiday music throughout the night, plus have a fun, have a complimentary picture made at the Cosmo Creations photo booth located inside the east entrance of the courthouse.

 

At the Justin-Potter Library, Christmas carols and story time for the children will begin at 6 p.m. The library will also have a special visit from Santa.

 

Inflatables and train rides will be available for the children, if weather permits.
