Michelle Burklow, the supervisor of instruction for Pre-K through sixth grade for the county school system, announced at last week’s school board meeting that the board of education has purchased advertising space on a billboard in Smithville to promote the "Read 20" program.

The DeKalb County school system introduced the program, designed to improve reading skills by encouraging parents to read to their children for 20 minutes a day, last June. Officials said that just 20 minutes a day reading aloud with young children strengthens relationships, encourages listening and language skills, promotes attention and curiosity, and establishes a strong reading foundation. These skills are essential for success in school and in life.

Research shows that if you read to a child at least 20 minutes a day they will get better grades throughout school, be better prepared for the job market as an adult, and be more likely to succeed in life. Local businesses are being asked to help get the Read 20 message out on their signs and marquees. Those interested in a "Read 20" yard sign may contact the board of education.

Meanwhile, the board granted permission for a weather antenna system to be installed at DeKalb Middle School. According to DMS Principal Randy Jennings, the system, which includes a computer to report weather in real time, will be paid for by a private party, and will be used in a sixth-grade science program.

In other business, Board Chairman W.J (Dub) Evins III read the monthly personnel report in the absence of Director of Schools Mark Willoughby, who was unable to attend the meeting because of an illness in his family.

Cynthia Taylor was employed as a bookkeeper, Shea Wiegele, a DCHS teacher, was granted a leave as requested, Jacqueline Michelle Overstreet was transferred from her position as substitute to educational assistant. Bus driver Elaine Davis resigned for health reasons.
