Rescue squad aids young hunters

What began as a hunting trip for five young men resulted in a recovery by the DeKalb County Rescue Squad Saturday night.
Rescue squad members reportedly came to the aid of Chris Chapman, 19, and a 17-year old after they fell from a bluff near Tabernacle Road.
“Their hounds treed a coon in a ravine, and they went down to get it. After they got back out, they realized that they had left their .22 rifle in the ravine. Two of the boys went back to get the gun, and slid on some leaves and fell to the bottom,” Rescue squad member Joe Johnson told the Review.
According to Johnson, the other three hunters saw the boys fall, but could not get them out of the hole. They walked out of the woods and called 911.
We rappeled down to them and then lowered baskets down to them on ropes to pull them out,” he said.
The call came in at 11:42 p.m., and rescue squad members worked at the scene from just before midnight until 3:30 a.m.
The minor boy reportedly had possible broken ribs, and was transported to DeKalb Community Hospital by EMS.
Johnson said Chapman had head and knee injuries, but refused treatment and went home in a private vehicle.
