Jose Reyes, 31, convicted by a DeKalb County jury on July 1 of raping an eight-year-old boy, was sentenced to a 32-year prison term by Judge David Patterson last Monday.

 

Reyes was found guilty of the charge of rape of a child, While Assistant District Attorney General Greg Strong asked that the maximum penalty of 40 years be imposed, and just eight years short of the maximum penalty on the charge for which he was found guilty, Rape of a child. The range of punishment in the case was 25 to 40 years.

 

Reyes was accused of raping the child between November 2012 and March 2013.

 

A jury of six men and six women took only half an hour to find Reyes guilty.

 

Reyes was indicted by the DeKalb County Grand Jury in April for the rape of an eight year old boy, the rape of another nine-year-old boy, a total of three counts of rape of a child, as well as two counts of criminal exposure to HIV.

 

The indictments alleged that Reyes engaged in unlawful sexual penetration of aboth boys, constituting the offense of rape of a child, and that he did this knowing that he was infected with HIV, constituting the offense of criminal exposure to HIV.

 

A motion for a new trial will be heard on Aug. 28.
