While many paid close attention to the local races Thursday evening, some state and federal races of local importance were taking place, including that for the seat that will represent DeKalb County in Washington D.C.
 John Rose handily won the Republican nomination for the 6th Congressional District, outdrawing his closest competitor, Bob Corlew by over 10,000 votes by a count of 43,768 to 33,088. Judd Matheny, long-time state representative out of Coffee County was a distant third with 16,743 votes, carrying only his home county. Lavern “Uturn LaVern” Vivio pulled 9,506 while Christopher Brian Monday rounded out the field with 3,021 votes.
Rose will take on Democrat nominee Dawn Barlow who garnered 16,875 votes, more than double her closest competitor, Merrilee Wineinger with 6,828. Rose got 45 percent of the vote in DeKalb,, followed by Corlew of 30 percent and Matheny with 15 percent.
Meanwhile in the run for 40th district state house, Terri Lynn Weaver is assured of another term as she bested Chad Z. Williams 8,689 to 3,289 for the Republican nomination. There is no Democrat seeking the office in November. The district includes most of DeKalb County aside from the southern portion. Weaver picked up 80 percent of the vote in DeKalb. Barlow got 44 percent of the DeKalb Democrats while Wineinger pulled 26 percent.
Clark Boyd won the Republican nomination in the 46th District which includes southern DeKalb, beating Menda McCall Homes 9,205 to 1,757. He will take on Mark Cagle who won the Democratic Primary over Faye Northcutt-Knox 1,890 to 1,651.
In the 17th District, incumbent Republican Mark Pody had no opposition. He will face Democrat Mary Alice Carfi in November. She also had no opposition in her primary.
In the biggest Tennessee races of the night, Lee Company owner Bill Lee claimed the Republican nomination for governor while former Nashville Mayor Karl Dean ran away with the Democratic nomination.
Lee took 36 percent of the vote on the way to victory, topping Randy Body who pulled 24 percent just ahead of Diane Black who had 23 percent. Beth Harwell got 15 percent. Lee won comfortably in DeKalb, getting 42 percent of the vote ahead of 25 percent for Black and 20 percent for Boyd.
Things were not near as close for Dean who crushed Craig Fitzhugh, taking 75 percent of the vote. The margin was even bigger in DeKalb where Dean pulled 87 percent of the vote.
