DeKalb County residents need to be aware of a scam occurring in surrounding counties that may possibly make its way into DeKalb, according to DeKalb County Sheriff Patrick Ray, who warned citizens to be cautious.
The scam consist of two individuals, usually both males, coming to a home stating they are with the tax assessor’s office or with the taxation office.
According to Ray, these individuals tell the homeowner they need to enter the home and measure each room for tax purposes.
Once inside the home, one individual will occupy the homeowner while the other, equipped with a measuring tape and writing material, enters each room to take measurements.
In reality, Ray warned, this individual is going through each room stealing medication, cash, jewelry and anything he can get into his pocket.
After talking with the county tax assessor’s office, Sheriff Ray was told that employees rarely go into a home when an appraisal is needed as most of the measuring is done outside the home.
In addition, county tax assessors employees’ vehicles are clearly marked with a sign of the office name.
If you have been contacted with such a request or if someone approaches your home with the above request, the sheriff urges you to call 215-3000.
Also, the office of tax assessor can be reached at 597-5925 to verify if one of their employees is scheduled to assess your home.
