Smithville will host a legendary gospel quartet at the county complex next week.The Stamps Quartet, formed in 1969 as J.D. Sumner and the Stamps Quartet, is now led by long-time member Ed Enoch.Stamps passed away in 1998.The Stamps have provided backing vocals for Jerry Lee Lewis, Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, Willie Nelson and Conway Twitty, among others.One of their latest projects was singing back-up with Alan Jackson on his latest gospel album.The award-winning quartet, possibly best known as Elvis Presley’s backing group during the last few years of his life, will visit DeKalb County on Aug. 10 to help celebrate Elvis Week 2013.The Stamps Quartet backed Elvis on stage and in the studio from November 1971 until Presley’s final show in Indianapolis, Indiana on June 26, 1977.“Elvis: Aloha 40” will take place in the auditorium at the county complex on Congress Boulevard.There will be two shows on Aug. 10, a matinee show at 2:30 p.m., and a second show at 7 p.m. that evening.Tickets for the event are $20 per person in advance, and $25 at the door the day of the show.The shows will double as a fundraiser to help purchase a curtain for the stage in the auditorium. The event was organized by Smithville native Tim Colwell, who has worked with the Stamps Quartet as part of country singer Ronnie McDowell's touring group.“Elvis: Aloha 40” will not only feature a performance by the Stamps, the set will be followed by a full-on Elvis tribute show, with the group providing the back-up vocals.Smithville resident Tom Duggin will handle the vocals for the Elvis tribute, backed by Colwell and a local group of musicians known as “TCB.”The show will feature a brass ensemble and female back-up singers as well as the core musicians and the Stamps Quartet.
