A DeKalb County High School student was arrested on a juvenile petition with carrying or possessing weapons on school property in November was reportedly been granted pre-trial diversion in Juvenile Court.
According to Sheriff Patrick Ray, the unidentified boy, 17, bragged to another student that he had brought a gun to school, and was taken into custody after two airsoft pistols were found in his vehicle in the school parking lot.
The young man allegedly told a classmate that he had a gun in his pocket while on school property, and held his hand inside the pocket of his sweatshirt in a manner that made it appear that he had a gun. He man apparently did not display a weapon, and made no threats toward anyone.
When the incident was reported to DCHS Assistant Principal David Gash, he and Principal Patrick Cripps apparently pulled the boy out of class and searched him. Finding no weapons, the principal and assistant reportedly searched his vehicle and found two air soft pistols. Ray said one of the guns was loaded with plastic "BBs"
The student allegedly admitted that the guns were his, and he was brought to the sheriff's department by the school resource officer. After consulting with the District Attorney General, the department filed charges.
The teen appeared before Juvenile Court Judge Bratten Cook, II on Dec. 11, and though the judge held a closed hearing in the case, the young man was reportedly granted pre-trial diversion and placed on probation for six months.
While the student was reportedly suspended from school for several days and then remanded to alternative school for the remainder of the year, his family has appealed the decision.
