The county commission voted Monday night to name the north end of the county complex for outgoing County Mayor Mike Foster.

As his last order of business on the commission, retiring Sixth District Commissioner Marshall Ferrell made a motion to name the section of the complex which contains the exercise room, gym, theater and game room the "Mike Foster Multi-Purpose Center." The commissioners voted unanimously to adopt the measure.

"The new county complex would not exist if it were not for the efforts of the commission and Mike Foster," Ferrell said in making the motion. "Therefore, I would like to make a motion to name the north end of the complex that houses the exercise room, game room, gym, and theater, the ‘Mike Foster Multi-Purpose Center.’"

Seventh District member Larry Summers, who is Chairman Pro Tem of the County Commission, took over the chair and also offered accolades for the mayor’s accomplishments during his 12 years in office, including the complex.

"We now have a facility that is second to none," Summers said. "You show me a small county with 18,000 to 20,000 people that has something to be proud of as much as that." Summers then presented Foster with a ceremonial gavel in a presentation box on behalf of the county commission for his years of service.

Foster also presented plaques to the outgoing commissioners Jimmy Poss, who served 16 years on the commission, Jerry Scott for 24 years, Marshall Ferrell for 12 years and David McDowell for four years. Bobby Joines and Rick Cantrell were absent, but plaques were made to honor Joines for 12 years service, and for Cantrell for completing John Green's term in the Fifth District.
