A collision on Highway 56 South resulted in three people being airlifted Monday. According to Trooper Gerald Carter of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Todd Van Dyne, 48, was traveling south in a 1987 Dodge pickup truck when he struck a southbound 2011 Nissan Rogue, driven by 50 year old Mark Cardwell of Nebraska in the rear. Cardwell's mother, Lady Belle Cardwell of Crossville was a passenger in the Nissan. Van Dyne was airlifted to Erlanger Hospital, and the Cardwell's were flown to Vanderbilt. DeKalb EMS, the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department, and DeKalb County Sheriff's Department assisted at the scene. The trooper said Van Dyne was charged with failure to exercise due care and failure to produce proof of insurance.
