Three arrested in commission of burglary

The Sheriff’s Department arrested three people Friday when they were allegedly caught in the commission of  a burglary on Holmes Creek Road.
Rodney Hugo Gora, 38, 47-year-old Brent Bernard Tolbert of Walling and 28-year-old Sandra Lynn Culwell were all charged with burglary and theft of property over $500 on Feb. 17.
A deputy dispatched to investigate reports of a burglary in progress reportedly found Gora, Tolbert, and Culwell standing beside of a truck that was loaded with several items taken from the house, including a birdcage, well pressure tank, refrigerator, jigsaw, mailbox, well pump, assorted wires, sheet metal, aluminum, and buckets of nails and screws.
All three were arrested and the stolen items were returned to the owner.
Bond for each is $7,500 and they will be in court March 8.
City police arrested 21-year-old Sabata Chavarria and charged him with leaving the scene of an accident on Jan. 24.
Officer James Cornelius was dispatched to a hit-and-run call on East Main.
The victim told the officer that a vehicle had hit him from behind and fled scene.
The victim gave the officer a description of the vehicle and told him that it had stopped at a residence on Estes Street.
Upon investigation police said Chavvaria admitted to driving the vehicle.
Winona Sue Lee, 55, was charged with filing a false report in the incident after first telling authorities that she was driving the vehicle, that she had left the scene because she was in fear of her life, and that she had called central dispatch to report the accident.
When her story could not be corroborated with dispatch records, she said she had called the police station, and then that her niece had called, and then told officers that no one had called.
Meanwhile,  24-year-old James Edward Gilles and 24-year-old Gennia Leigh Wilson are each charged with animal cruelty.
According to Sheriff Partrick Ray. a deputy responding to a complaint of animal cruelty on Old Snow Hill Road on Feb. 3 found a starved boxer mixed dog, approximately one year old.
The deputy said the animal could hardly stand.
It was determined that the dog belonged to both Gilles and Wilson. While the officer was there, Gilles arrived at the residence with food for the dog. The dog was taken to a local veterinarian and as of Feb. 13 the animal was still being treated.
Both Gilles and Wilson were arrested on Feb. 13.
Bond for each is $2,500 and they will both appear in court on Feb. 23.
Melissa A. Wheeler, 28, was charged with public intoxication, resisting arrest and escape after city police were called to Lincoln Street to investigate reports of an intoxicated person.
Officers say Wheeler kept trying to walk away from them at the scene.
She was arrested, but upon arrival at the police department she took off, running toward East Market Street before being apprehended.
She will be in court  March 1, and her  bond is set at $7,000.
Melinda Beth Murphy, 26, is charged with two counts of forgery.
Sheriff Ray reports that Murphy forged a check in the amount of $400 on Feb 9, and cashed it at a local bank.
Murphy forged another check on the same day, this time in the amount of $612.30.
She reportedly cashed that check at an  Alexandria bank.
Murphy was arrested on Feb. 16. Alexandria police also have charges against her.
Her bond is set at $7,000 and she will be in court March 1.
Micheal A. Briley, 19, was charged with theft and burglary on Feb. 10 after a co-worker claimed that he had stolen her car keys at work and gone to her car, stealing $70 cash out of her purse.
Witnesses reportedly saw Briley take keys and enter the vehicle.
Briley will be in court March 8, and his  bond is set at $5,000.
Cassandra Estes, 29, was cited for shoplifting on Feb. 16.
Estes reportedly admitted to concealing items at Wal Mart.
Her court date is Feb. 23.
Kristen D Hart was charged with fraudulent use of a debit card after  allegedly used a stolen card to withdraw approximately $800 on Jan 21-23.
Her court date is set for Feb 23, and her bond is $2,500.
City police arrested Carl Edward Martin, 49, and charged him with domestic assault on  Jan. 27.
 Officers responding to a call on South Mountain Street spoke to an alleged victim who told them that Martin had hit and strangled her.
The woman had injuries to her eyes, lips, chest and head.
Martin will be in court Feb. 9, and he is under a $2,500 bond.
Martin was also charged with violation of bond conditions on Jan. 29 after Officer Matt Farmer found Martin at the same residence.
Martin’s court date on the second charge is Feb. 9, and his bond is set at  $2,500.
Brandon Zay Stringfellow, 37, was charged with domestic assault on Feb. 5.
Officers on the scene spoke to the alleged victim, who told them that Stringfellow was outside her home and that she went out to tell him to leave.
He reportedly attacked her, hit her and grabbed her by the throat.
He is under a $2,500 bond and he will be in court March 1.
Samuel Wade Walker was charged with theft of merchandise on Jan. 26.
Walker allegedly took merchandise from a local retail outlet to the restroom at the store and concealed it in his pants.
City police said Walker admitted to taking the merchandise.
More defendants have been picked up by the sheriff's department in recent drug indictments.
Brandon Wayne (Worm) Caldwell, 30, was picked up for two counts of sale and delivery of a Schedule II drug in a drug-free zone.
His bond is $80,000.
Brandon Matthew (Troll) Byford, 23, was arrested for sale and delivery of a Schedule II drug and sale and delivery of a Schedule III drug in a drug-free zone.
His bond is $60,000.
Christopher David Hall of Bon Aqua, 32, was arrested for sale and delivery of a Schedule II drug in a drug-free zone.
His bond is set at $30,000.
All three will appear in criminal court for arraignment on  Feb. 24.
