crash

A head-on crash on Sparta Highway Monday resulted in a three year old being airlifted. According to Trooper Chris Delong of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Joey Young, 49, was traveling west on Highway 70 in a 1999 Ford F150 when a vehicle stopped in front of him. When he swerved to avoid hitting the vehicle, he reportedly crossed into the eastbound lane and collided with an oncoming 2014 Toyota Prius driven by Virginia Kirby, 34, of Cookeville head-on. Kirby’s was carrying her three-year-old daughter as a passenger in the Prius. Kirby was transported to St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital by DeKalb EMS, and the child was taken to a landing zone near the Midway Community Center and flown to Vanderbilt Medical center. Young sustained minor injuries in the crash, and was issued a citation for failure to exercise due care. Trooper Delong was assisted at the scene by Trooper Sean Tramel, members of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, and members of the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department.
