Smithville Elementary School will get a visit from The Tennessee Titans Caravan on May 8.
During the Caravan school visits, which are closed to the general public, the Titans deliver a message to students about developing study habits, making good choices and setting goals.  Also, the NFL’s “Play 60” theme is emphasized, encouraging children to stay healthy by getting daily exercise.
The announcement was made by SES Principal Dr. Bill Tanner at Thursday night's school board meeting.
"On May 8, we've got the Tennessee Titans Caravan coming to visit and put on an educational program,” Tanner said. “They'll be there at 8:30 a.m. They have a distinct schedule that they have sent me, minute by minute of what they're going to be doing. It'll last about 45 minutes to an hour. Some of the players, their mascots, and maybe some of the cheerleaders will come," he concluded.
Informing the board of other upcoming activities at the school, Tanner said that SES has field trips, spelling bees and an open house.
"We've got a lot of stuff going on at Smithville Elementary,” he shared. “We've got spelling bees going on. One fun day toward the end of the year. We've got field trips planned.”
He also said that kindergarten students will begin testing next week, pre-registration for kindergarten will be held at the end of April, and that second graders at the school will be tested in May.
“Next week we've got kindergarten testing on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and then on Thursday we've got an open house for the parents of the children who will be in kindergarten,”  Tanner shared. “Next year they can come in from 3:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. to visit with the teachers, me, and some of the other people who work at Smithville Elementary. Friday of next week we have pre-registration for the children who will be in kindergarten next year. April 26, 27, and 30 and maybe May 1 we're going to be testing our second grade. The second grade is not required to take the TCAP test but we want to see where our children stand so we take a Stanford Achievement Test and they can use that information when they go to Northside Elementary School," he concluded.
