Turner comes to court drunk

A man who showed up intoxicated for court and then had to be dragged from the courtroom as he fought with officers should be more sober when he comes to court next week.

The drunk defendant, Richard Brandon Turner, 46, of Smithville is now charged with public intoxication and resisting stop, frisk, halt, or arrest.

His bond has been set at $5,000 and his court date is April 5.

According to Sheriff Patrick Ray, Turner showed up at the courthouse while court was in session and started making a stir. “He had slurred speech and a strong odor of alcohol on his person,” the sheriff said, noting he was given a chance to make things easier. “He was asked to remain silent but was unable to do so.”

The judge found Turner in contempt of court and gave him 30 days in jail for showing up drunk and causing a disturbance. However, the 30 days may be just a beginning as Turner fought with officers as he was being taken in custody.

“He was told to place his hands behind his back but he pulled away and tried to resist,” the sheriff said, noting the officers had to take him to the floor to get him in custody.
