Two escape injury in bridge crash
wreck brdg w L

Two people apparently escaped with minor bumps and bruises when the 2013 Mustang they were traveling in left the roadway and came to rest under a bridge Sunday. Captain Steven Leffew of the Smithville Police Department told the Review that Christal Cantrell, 44, of Murfreesboro was headed east with a passenger, 36-year-old Matthew Phillips of Smyrna when she lost control of the car and broke a utility pole guidewire before careening down a creek bank and and under a bridge at Anthony Avenue and Highway 70. Cantrell reportedly told the captain that the accident took place because she and Phillips were arguing. The two were treated at the scene by DeKalb EMS, but refused transport to the hospital. While Cantrell submitted to and passed field sobriety tasks, she was cited for violation of the financial responsibility law. Members of the Smithville Volunteer Fire Department and DeKalb EMS assisted Captain Leffew at the scene.
