DeKalb County's September unemployment rate was down slightly. The rate came in at 6.1 percent for the month, down from 6.9 percent in August and 7.8 percent in September 2013.
With a local labor force of 9,090 in September, 8,540 were employed and 560 were out of work.
In surrounding counties, White reported a rate of eight percent for September, Warren had a 6.8 percent rate for the month, Putnam’s rate was six percent. Cannon County reported a 5.6 percent rate, Smith’s rate was at 5.3 percent rate and Wilson’s rate was five percent.
County unemployment rates for September show the rate decreased in 94 counties and increased in one. Knox County had the state's lowest rate for a major metropolitan area for September at 5.4 percent, down from 6.3 in August. Davidson County was at 5.5 percent, down from 6.2 percent. Hamilton County was at 6.6 percent, down from 7.4 percent. Shelby County was at 8.4 percent, down from 8.9 percent in August.
The preliminary rate for the state in September was 7.3 percent, down from the 7.4 percent August revised rate. The national rate for September was 5.9 percent, down from 6.1 percent in August.
The state and national unemployment rates are seasonally adjusted while the county unemployment rates are not. Seasonal adjustment is a statistical technique that eliminates the influences of weather, holidays, the opening and closing of schools, and other recurring seasonal events from economic time series.
