Unemployment rate rises in December

The unemployment rate in DeKalb County rose slightly in December, coming in at 7.3 percent for the month.
The December number was below the 7.9 percent rate reported in December, 2011, but up slightly from 6.9 percent in November.
The total number of DeKalb countians employed in December was 8,890, and 700 were listed as unemployed, bringing the total workforce to 9,600 people.
Among surrounding counties, White County’s December unemployment rate was at 11 percent, Clay County was at 10 percent, and Jackson County reported a  9.6 percent rate.
Cumberland County reported a 9.2 percent rate for the month, and Warren County came in at 8.4 percent.
Smith County’s rate for December was at 7.5 percent, and Putnam County reported a 7.1 percent rate.
Wilson County had a 6.0 percent rate in December, while Cannon County’s number for the month was at  5.9 percent.
The unemployment rate decreased in two counties and increased in 93 counties  for the month.
The state unemployment rate for December remained constant from the November revised rate of 7.6 percent.
The national unemployment rate for December 2012 was 7.8 percent, also unchanged from the previous month.
Knox County had the state's lowest major metropolitan rate of 5.7 percent, up from 5.2 percent in November.
Davidson County was 6.2 percent, up from 5.7 percent. Hamilton County was 7.2 percent, up from 6.4 percent, and Shelby County was 8.7 percent, up from 7.8 percent in November.
Meanwhile, recipients of Tennessee unemployment benefits during 2012 are able to access the information they need for income tax purposes on the state Department of Labor & Workforce Development homepage at https://tdl wd.tn.gov/ui1099/.
Recipients must enter their birth date or the same PIN they used to certify or inquire on their unemployment claim,.
Claimants can view a summary of total unemployment benefits paid to them, view the total amount of federal income tax withheld, and print a summary of this information.
 The department also began mailing the IRS Form 1099-G to more than 245,888 benefit recipients on Jan. 14.
The forms will reach claimants no later than Jan. 31. The U.S. Postal Service will not forward 1099-G forms.
Recipients of unemployment benefits are not required to submit a copy of their 1099-G form with their income tax return.
