DeKalb County Historian Tommy Webb will host another historical program to benefit the DeKalb Animal Coalition on April 16 at the county complex auditorium as a part of the "DAC Presents…" series of fundraisers.

Webb will speak on the subject of "Churches in DeKalb County Then and Now" to help raise money for the coalition’s planned animal shelter, to be constructed behind Tenneco Automotive on Highway 56 in Smithville. Admission is $10.00 at the door, and all proceeds will benefit the DAC.

Webb will cover the history of the first churches in DeKalb County, the difference in doctrine, camp meetings and where they were held, the shouting Methodist and foot washing Baptist churches that have died out. Changes in local churches through the years, churches with the largest membership, and Spanish language congregations will be discussed.

Meanwhile, the DAC’s re-sale store at 110 West Walnut (next door to the former location of the White Possum Restaurant) boasts garden supplies, bicycles, furniture, clothing, books, toys, housewares, seasonal decorations, electronics, jewelry and more. The store is run entirely by volunteers who have put in countless hours since its opening in September. As you wander around in the store looking for just what you need, you can take a break and sit down at the Coffee Corner complete with free coffee and dessert, and talk with friends as you discuss the events of the day.

The DAC Benefit Store has been generously leased to the DeKalb Animal Coalition from Robin and Donnie Driver, who saw the need for our community to have a place to raise money for the equipment and supplies needed when the animal shelter is built. Groundbreaking for the shelter is due to begin in the spring of this year.

Donations of all items are accepted for re-sale at the store, furniture is especially needed. Hours are Tuesday and Friday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.-3 p.m. All merchandise is donated, and every cent raised will go to the DAC to complete the interior of the new shelter.
