Smithville Boy Scout Troop 347 has begun work on an outdoor classroom for Northside Elementary School. Through the initiative of scout Thomas Webb, the troop worked on the 20’ x 30’ pavilion Dec. 16.
The project is similar to the outdoor classroom constructed last year at DeKalb Middle School. Webb began work on his Eagle Scout project earlier this year. Several members of the troop assisted as he held a fundraising car wash to raise money for the classroom. Skilled contractors had already laid the concrete floor and will finish the wooden frame and metal roof.
The Board of Education approved Webb’s idea in July.
“This will provide an alternate learning environment that will enrich the students’ school experience and help foster an appreciation for nature,” Webb told the school board.
