Two separate car wrecks seriously injured three DeKalb County residents this weekend, according to local law enforcement officials.
A devastating two-vehicle crash early Saturday morning resulted in two men being flown to Erlanger Medical Center with critical injuries.
The accident happened on Highway 70 near the intersection of Highway 96 on Snow Hill. Chris Gammons and Troy Bruno, both of Smithville, were transported by Life Force and Air Evac helicopter ambulances to Chattanooga from the scene.
According to Trooper Darrell Knowles of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, and a call to central dispatch at 3:28 a.m., 52-year-old Johnny Hickey of Liberty was traveling west on Highway 70 in a 2004 F350 full-size flatbed truck when he crossed the center lane directly into the path of an eastbound 2002 Nissan Altima driven by the wife of one of the victims, 32-year-old Cleva Elaine Gammons.
Chris Gammons, a front-seat passenger of the Altima, was ejected from the vehicle and came to rest on the pavement in front of the car. Bruno was trapped in the backseat and had to be extricated by members of the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department’s Extrication and Rescue Team.
DeKalb EMS transported Gammons and Bruno to an organized landing zone at the intersection of Highway 70 and Toad Road. Mrs. Gammons was transported to DeKalb Community Hospital where she was treated and released. Hickey was not injured in the accident and was charged with three counts of vehicular assault.
A family member told the Smithville Review that Gammons suffered a broken leg, a dislocated knee and hip, and a blood clot caused the aortic valve in his heart to burst.
He was placed on a machine to help his kidneys function as they began to shut down Saturday night, and put into a medically induced coma due to his low oxygen level, according to the family member.
On Monday, Gammons was taken into surgery to have part of his large intestine removed due to dying tissue. Prior to surgery, family members said they were told his leg would have to be amputated but surgeons did not follow through with the procedure due to Gammons’ critical condition.
In the second weekend accident, Albert Silcox, of Brush Creek, was seriously injured Saturday evening around 6:40 p.m. when his pickup truck overturned, pinning him inside. He was airlifted from the scene and flown to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga.
Silcox was driving a 1998 GMC Sierra pickup when he failed to negotiate a curve on Temperance Hall Road. His pickup crossed to Old Temperance Hall Road where it came to rest on a steep embankment, trapping him inside, according to officials.
Members of the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department’s Extrication Team stabilized the vehicle and freed the driver.
Members of the Temperance Hall Station of the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department set up the landing zone for the helicopter ambulance at the Temperance Hall Fire Station.
Others assisting on the scene were officers of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, Campbell’s Wrecker Service and the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
No word on Silcox’s condition was available to press-time.
