A Cookeville woman was charged with driving under the influence and evading arrest after a high-speed chase in which a DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department Detective reportedly pursued her from Dowelltown to Wilson County early this (Tuesday) morning.
Cassandra Dianna Viamonte, 27, was taken into custody in Watertown.
According to Sheriff Patrick Ray, a detective from his department was traveling east on Highway 70 in the early morning hours when met a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction and saw it crossing into oncoming traffic. When the lawman attempted to conduct a traffic stop at the intersection of West Main Street and Highway 70 in Dowelltown the driver allegedly fled west on Highway 70 at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.
Ray said Viamonte continued on Highway 70 until she reached Watertown, where she turned onto South Statesville Road and then to North Statesville Road before reaching East College Street in Watertown. The woman reportedly pulled onto a dead end street and drove around a house, then struck the pursuing officer’s cruiser, causing minor damage.
There were no injuries in the incident.
Ray said the detective approached the vehicle and spoke with Viamonte, who had a strong odor of alcohol on her person. Her speech was reportedly slurred, she was unsteady on her feet, and performed poorly on all field sobriety tasks.
After her arrest, Viamonte was transported to the hospital for a blood withdrawal, then to the sheriff’s office for booking. Her bond was set at $11,500, and she will appear in court on Oct. 27.
