Wreck kills one, injures nine

A Smithville woman was fatally injured in a two-car crash just outside of town at 8:18 p.m. on Highway 56 Saturday evening.According to a report by the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Judy L. Bullard, 63, of Smithville died at Vanderbilt Hospital after being airlifted from the scene.Investigating THP Trooper William Jackson reported Bullard’s 1995 Toyota Tercel drifted into the northbound lane of travel on Highway 56 and sideswiped a 2015 Dodge Journey van driven by Virginia R. Carrier, 30, also of Smithville.Carrier was injured along with six passengers including juvenile boys aged 1, 5 and 10 years old and three girls, two aged 13 years old and one 2-year-old. All were transported to the hospital.Bullard’s two passengers, Mary C. Miller, 65, and a 7-year old boy were injured and taken to the hospital.According to the THP, all persons were properly restrained with safety devices and no citations were issued.In addition to the THP, DeKalb County Fire and Rescue, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Deputies, EMS and the Smithville Police Department responded to the incident.
