Wreck leaves car in stream

Everyone walked away after a two-vehicle wreck on West Broad in which one of the vehicles plunged into a flood-swollen stream in front of Walmart Thursday morning.

Police say Catherine Newby, 74, of Smithville was driving a 2012 Nissan Altima, and was pulling out onto West Broad from Anthony Avenue, when she crossed the path of a 2011 Jeep, driven by Tammy Harris, 50, of Murfreesboro. She was going east on Broad Street. Newby’s car ran off the highway down an embankment and stopped near a flowing creek.

Harris told police that she tried to stop to avoid the collision but couldn’t due to the wet road conditions. Newby told officers that after the collision she accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake.
