A drunk driver couldn’t have found a less conspicuous place to catch a nap when he fell asleep behind the wheel in the busiest intersection in Smithville.
The man, Craig Alan Yarbrough, 57, of Birmingham, Ala., is charged with DUI and will appear before the judge on Sept. 20.
According to Sheriff Patrick Ray, Yarbrough’s gold Hyundai was found sitting in the middle of the intersection of West Broad and South Congress Boulevard with its lights off.
“The officer stopped to investigate and found Yarbrough passed out in the driver seat,” the sheriff reported, noting the deputy was able to wake the slumbering driver. “He had the strong odor of alcoholic beverage on his person.”
The driver was unsteady on his feet when he stepped out of the vehicle. He also had slurred speech and bloodshot eyes.
“He refused to submit to a field sobriety test saying he had medical issues with his feet,” the sheriff added.
Yarbrough will face a minimum 48 hours in jail, $350 fine and one year forfeiture of driving privileges if he is convicted of drunk driving.
