The DeKalb West School basketball teams wound down their seasons, playing a flurry of games last week. The teams traveled to Woodbury, Auburntown, and Carroll-Oakland last week, then played games at home against Providence.
On Jan. 13, DWS traveled to Woodbury where they faced some stiff competition. In the girls’ game, the Lady Bulldogs got off to a slow start. DeKalb only scored one point in the first period, coming from a free throw. Woodbury scored 12 points, jumping to a big lead.
The Lady Bulldogs scored seven points in the second period, all from Addison Oakley. Oakley had two two-pointers and a three-point basket. Woodbury scored 13, adding to their lead at halftime, 25-8.
DeKalb only scored two points in the third period, again only from free throws. Woodbury got another 10 points, putting them up. 32-10.
The Lady Bulldogs got seven points in the fourth, including two point shots by Oakley and Lydia Brown. Woodbury was held to only two points, but that was enough for the 34-17 victory.
Brown went three for six on free throws, while Oakley was one for four. Carrigan Chapman and Shelby Clayborn were each one for two.
In the boys’ game, the Bulldogs jumped out to a big lead and never looked back. DeKalb scored 12 points in the first period, with three-pointers by Ethan Martin and Jacob Frazier, two two-pointers by Brady Driver, and a two-point shot by Cody Hale. Woodbury was held to five points.
DWS had six points in the second period. Paxton Butler, Driver, and Jessie Smith each had a two-point shot. Woodbury got eight points, but the Bulldogs held the lead at the half, 18-13.
The Bulldogs scored 10 points in the third, with Damien Dishman getting two two-pointers, and Butler and Grayson Redmon each getting a two-point shot. Woodbury had seven points and DWS was up, 28-20.
DeKalb ended the game with seven points, including two-point shots by Dishman, Martin, and Driver. Woodbury was held to eight points, giving the Bulldogs the 35-28 win.
Dishman went three for eight on free throws, while Driver and Smith were each zero for one.
On Jan. 14, DWS was in Auburntown and in the girls’ game again the Lady Bulldogs fell behind early. DeKalb scored five points in the first period, including two-point goals by Oakley and Brown. Auburntown came away with 12 points.
Brown had two two-point baskets in the second period, but that was the only points the Lady Bulldogs would see. Auburntown racked up 14 more points and increased their lead, 26-9.
Brown put up three more two-point shots in the third period, accounting for six of the team’s seven points. Auburntown piled on 14 more to increase their lead, 40-16.
The Lady Bulldogs scored nine points in the fourth, with Brown getting two more two-pointers, and Carrigan Chapman and Oakley each getting a two-point goal. Auburntown sealed their win with six points, and the 46-25 victory.
Brown was one for four on free throws, while Chapman and Clayborn went one for two.
In the boys’ game, again the Bulldogs struck hard, taking 10 points and holding Auburntown scoreless. Dishman had two two-point goals, while Martin, Butler, and Driver each had a two-pointer of their own.
The Bulldogs scored eight points in the second, with Dishman getting two more two-pointers, and Driver and Redmon each getting a two-point basket. Auburntown came to life, scoring 13 points, with DeKalb in the lead at the half, 18-13.
DWS opened up in the third, getting 15 points, including five two-pointer by Dishman, and Driver and Frazier with a two-pointer each. Auburntown was held to seven points, giving DeKalb a 33-20 lead.
Brady Driver had two two-point goals in the fourth, while Martin, Butler, and Hale each got two-point baskets. DeKalb scored 13 points and held Auburntown to seven, taking a 46-27 victory.
Driver went two for four on free throws, while Dishman was one for one. Butler was zero for two.
On Jan. 16, DeKalb West was in Wilson County to face teams from Carroll-Oakland. The Lady Bulldogs once again found the basket hard to find, scoring only two points in the first period, both from free throws. Carroll-Oakland put up 13 points and took a big lead.
The Lady Bulldogs had two points in the second period, with a two-point shot by Brown. Carroll-Oakland had another six points, giving them a 19-4 lead at the half.
It was two more points for the Lady Bulldogs in the third period, again from a Brown two-pointer. CO got four points and increased their lead, 23-6.
Brown had two two-point shots in the fourth period, while Oakley had one. CO had two points, more than enough for the 25-12 victory.
Brown went two for two on free throws, while Oakley was zero for four.
The boys’ game was a battle from the start with the game staying close all the way to the end. The Bulldogs scored 12 points in the first period, with Dishman and Driver each getting two two-pointers, and Martin getting one. Caroll-Oakland edged by with 13 points and the narrow lead.
Carroll-Oakland looked to run away with the game in the second period, getting 16 points and holding DeKalb to only two. CO took the big lead, 29-14.
DWS came back strong in the third, taking 13 points, including four two-pointers by Dishman, and a three-pointer by Martin. Butler, Driver, and Redmon also had two-pointers. CO was held to only three points, narrowing their lead, 32-27.
The Bulldogs scored 15 points in the fourth, with a three-pointer by Martin, and two pointers by Dishman, Butler, Driver, and Redmon. Carroll-Oakland came away with 13 points, taking the narrow victory, 45-42.
Dishman was six for 10 on free throws, while Driver was five for eight.
On Jan. 18, DWS was at home, this time facing teams from Providence Christian. It was a tough game for the Lady Bulldogs, who would remain scoreless through the first three periods.
Providence score 10 in the first period, four in the second, and 12 in the third.
Down 26-0 in the fourth, the Lady Bulldogs finally showed some life. Brown scored four two-point baskets, while Oakley and Kendra Whitehead also came away with two-pointers. DWS scored 12 points, to Providence’s eight, far from a win, but avoiding the shutout, 34-12.
Oakley was zero for four on free throws, while Savannah Belcher and Clayborn were zero for two.
For the boys’ game, the match would go back and forth and end in a close score in overtime.
Points were hard to come by on both side early in the game. The Bulldogs scored four points in the first period, including a two-pointer by Dishman. Providence got three points.
In the second period, DWS had eight points, including two two-pointers by Dishman, and a two-pointer by Smith. Providence had six points, giving DeKalb the 12-9 lead at halftime.
The Bulldogs put up eight more points in the third, with Driver getting two two-point baskets, and Dishman and Martin each getting one. Providence narrowed the game, scoring 10 points, with DeKalb up 20-19.
DWS put up eight more points in the fourth, including three-pointers by Martin and Smith. Providence scored nine, tying the score at the end of regulation, 28 all.
Overtime would be a battle and the Bulldogs came away with eight more points, including a three-point shot by Martin. But, Providence would get 10 points and take the 38-36 win.
Martin was four for seven on free throws, while Dishman was three for seven. Driver went three for six, Smith was zero for three, and Redmon was zero for one.
