A Neil Drive man was charged with two counts of aggravated assault last week after authorities said he pointed a handgun at deputies and fired shots.
David Scott Davis, 65, was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, public intoxication, possession of a handgun while intoxicated, and resisting stop, frisk, halt, or arrest on Feb. 4. According to Sheriff Patrick Ray, deputies dispatched to Neil Drive in Smithville to check out a report of a man with a gun found Davis, who pointed a Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum at them and then fired shots across the road into the woods.
Davis was found to be unsteady on his feet and to have a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his person. Multiple beer cans were reportedly found on the ground around him. When the officers attempted to place him under arrest, Davis allegedly resisted, and had to be forcibly taken to the ground.
His bond was set at $14,500, and he will appear in court on Feb. 26.
Meanwhile, a domestic call resulted in the arrest of two women on Feb. 7.
Betty Marie Davis, 49, and her daughter, 25-year-old Heather Marie Davis of Rock Island were both charged with domestic assault after a deputy was dispatched to a Corinth Church Road and spoke with the two women, who reportedly said that they had gotten into an argument over a car. The sheriff said the younger Davis claimed her mother hit her in the left eye, causing it to become red and swollen. Betty claimed her daughter punched her in the face, causing her nose to bleed.
Bond for both women was set at $1,500, and they will appear in court on Feb. 12.
Tommye Lou Bell, 53, was charged with a third offense of driving under the influence and having contraband in a penal institution, as well as being cited for violation of the financial responsibility law (no insurance) on Feb. 4.
Ray said a deputy dispatched to look into reports of a reckless driver on Nashville Highway encountered a silver 2012 Honda SUV traveling east from the Dollar General Store. The deputy allegedly saw the vehicle cross the center line of the highway several times and veer into the passing lane.
When he activated his emergency lights to stop the Honda, the driver, Bell, reportedly crossed the center turn lane into westbound traffic and almost hit an oncoming Ford pickup. The SUV then turned into Tiger Drive and pulled into a parking lot.
Bell's speech was found to be slurred and she allegedly had difficulty finding her driver’s license and vehicle information. She could not produce proof of insurance. After performing poorly on field sobriety tasks, Bell was placed under arrest.
Prior to a search at the jail, Ray said she was asked if she had any illegal substances on her, and she said no. A search allegedly led to a female correctional officer finding a bottle containing 54 Dilaudid tablets in Bell's bra.
Her bond was set at $9,500, and she will appear in court on March 19.
Mark Anthony Thompson, 55, was charged with a second offense of driving under the influence on Feb. 2. The sheriff said a deputy dispatched to Bob Mathis Road in Brush Creek to check out a report of an intoxicated driver found Thompson sitting in a truck. While speaking with him, the deputy detected a strong odor of alcohol on his person, and found his speech to be slurred and very slow.
Thompson allegedly said "I’ve been driving around drunk all day." Due to his level of intoxication, Thompson was unable to stand and perform field sobriety tasks. He was placed under arrest and taken to the hospital for a blood withdrawal, then taken to the sheriff's department for booking. His prior DUI offense was in April 2007.
His bond was set at $3,000, and he will appear in court on Feb. 19.
Tisha Elaine Burns, 43, was charged with a second offense of driving under the influence on Feb. 6.
Ray said a deputy was dispatched to New Bildad Road to verify a report of a suspicious vehicle parked by a bridge. The officer reportedly found a white Crown Victoria there, and spoke with the driver, who proved to be Burns. He detected an odor of alcohol on her person, that her eyes were glossy and that she was unsteady on her feet. After performing poorly on field sobriety tasks, she was arrested and taken to the hospital for a blood withdrawal and then to the jail for booking.
Her bond is $3,000, and she will appear in court on March 5.
Burns and a passenger in her vehicle, 44-year-old Comer Thomas Vance of Shelbyville, were also cited for criminal trespassing in the same incident. It was determined that they were trespassing on private property, where two "No Trespassing" signs are posted.
Ray said the bridge has been the site of trouble on several occasions, and that his department recently joined forces with a local neighborhood watch program to keep an eye on the area. Part of the initiative was the land owner’s posting of "No Trespassing" signs on the property.
