The unemployment numbers are out for September and again, we’re down both across the state and here in DeKalb County. Considering 2010 when DeKalb County had a 13.7 percent unemployment rate, this is good news in anyone’s book.
In addition to the low unemployment figures, DeKalb County was ranked third recently in tourism-revenue growth across the state. The combination points to high hopes for future growth here at home.
Smithville and DeKalb County have a plethora to offer both residents and visitors alike. Just in the last six months RiverWatch Golf Club and Resort played host to the national AJGA Junior tournament with players coming from as far as China, plus it's been retained to bring the Smithville golf course up to par. Another event, WakeFest, entertained professional and amateur contestants and professionals in a water sport that is growing every year.
We’ve had events like the solar eclipse where folks targeted Smithville as a destination and filled the airport, which has the lowest gas prices anywhere around. The DeKalb County Women’s Expo, the DeKalb County Fair, continuing programs at Edgar Evins State Park, just to name a few, bring folks into our community.
With this in mind, the Smithville Review has an awareness program called “Try DeKalb First.” You can find a special section in today’s paper that lists many of our local businesses and service providers to bring them to the forefront in the pages of paper where you can start looking for local companies that have what you want.
The holidays are fast approaching and many local businesses are stocking up with quality items, hand-made local gifts, as well as name brands. So before you go outside of town, why not give a look at what DeKalb County has to offer.
Each week, in Business, Inc., we feature businesses that are new to town or maybe starting a new service or line of products.
The Smithville Review is dedicated to helping our community in any way possible, and wants everyone to know what a gem we have right here at home.
